Habitat for Humanity: Day 6

Reflection

     This week we enjoyed meeting new people, sharing food together, and helping others. We learned that a collaborative effort makes hard work easier and more manageable. We participated in different stages of house construction and gained insight into some of the many ways Habitat for Humanity contributes to the Pemi-Valley community.

Habitat for Humanity: Day 5

Today we worked on a site in New Hampton. We cleared the trees and brush so Habitat for Humanity could build a house on the land.  Frank, the Executive Director of Habitat at Pemi-Valley, showed us how to use the tools safely, including a machete. 

It was hard work, but we achieved a lot in one day!

Habitat for Humanity: Day 4

 

Today we went to a house and prepared the walls for painting. We covered the screws with thin coats of drywall. We learned that this technique is called "mudding". 

 

We did all the walls, including the ceiling of the second and first floor. We learned about the steps that have to happen for a house to be completed.

 

In the afternoon, we visited the Dumont Farm and saw pigs, cows, chickens in their habitats. We learned a bit more about life on a farm.

Over the last couple days we have been helping out at the ReStore run by Habitats for Humanity, sweeping organizing and generally being useful all around. We reorganized large portions of the store, improving the efficiency and tidiness. We also cleaned and sweeped the store to make the space more appealing for the customers. We saw volunteers from Holderness School there too, reminding us of the great outreach this program has locally within the surrounding counties and the good we are doing for our local community. We are very proud to have been a great help so far and are excited for what the rest of the week has in store for us, because the more we work, the more we help.

Today we worked on cleaning and moving items in the store. We moved paint buckets, and organized furniture and paintings. 

We also painted some decorations to put on the windows of the store to bring the spring spirit. For this activity we used their recycled paint that is eco-friendly. 

Starting tomorrow we will transition to work on construction sites in Ashland and New Hampton. We are grateful to the staff at ReStore in Plymouth for the opportunity to give back to the community.

we are having so much fun with Habitat for Humanity! We have already built three children's picnic tables and have two chicken coops in progress. Taylor Healey '20, has been a leader with the screw gun and JW Cantwell is a pro on the  circular saw.

In our second day of building, we built two picnic tables.  Then we split up into two groups to see who could complete one faster.

We are very excited to be building picnic tables and chicken coops!!! This is for raising money for a fundraiser that helps people near the Plymouth area get a proper home.
