Finishing Out Our Healthy Living: Days 5 and 6

Friday:
Today we went to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s in Bedford, NH. There, we looked at food labels to see if location and sources were clearly marked on the produce which they were. We also checked to see how local the foods are. A lot of foods are from around the area but some are from all over the place. We also looked at the standards of Whole Foods and the certifications they have for animal welfare. We found that Whole Foods does a better job with labeling but Trader Joe’s sells more of their own brand. We also compared hygiene products and found majority of the products sold have better ingredients than products you might find else where. The ingredients they use are also included in their certifications. Then, later in the day we made simple body scrubs with natural ingredients such as oats, honey, epsom salts, apple cider vinegar and coconut oil. We also squeezed in a conversation about COVID-19 since it is very relevant in everyones health currently - physically, mentally and emotionally.

Saturday:
Today we began our day by making a simple lip scrub with brown sugar, coconut oil, and honey! It tasted delicious. We then discussed what we learned over the past week and took notes on our ideas for a future symposium presentation. To finish our morning together, Mrs. Aronson led us in a 45 minute yoga class, sealing the end of our wonderful week together.

Creating a Healthier Pizza with Whole Grains at KAF

On Thursday March 12, Healthy Inside and Out woke up bright and early to take a three-hour cooking class at King Arthur in Norwich, Vermont. The students learned the difference between flours (such as white versus whole wheat) and how you can change the taste by alternating the flour type. Each student made two different does from scratch and added the toppings they pleased. After they finished making the pizza, all the students got to eat their pizzas along with a salad for lunch! We then stopped at the Co-Op on the way back home from our class!

Mindful Eating: Healthy Inside and Out, Day 3

We started the day at 9:00 on a bus to Brookford Farm. At the farm, we met our tour guide, Jodie,
who showed us around the farm. We got the inside scoop on how they make cheese. There
were many chickens in the coop and they had a very distinct smell. Then we were shown the
cows and calves, and how they are fed and milked. We also learned that cows can cry. Next up
was the pigs and there were newborns running around the pen. The group tried to help out in
the fields, but they had done a lot of work in the morning, so they did not need our help. After
that our tour guide was kind enough to bring us homemade yogurt and cheese. When we
arrived back at campus we grabbed lunch and started research on healthy eating styles. Then
we did some relaxing yoga with Ms. Aronson to finish the day.

Essential Oils and Yoga: Day 2 of Healthy Inside and Out

Today March 10, 2020, we all woke up excited to start day two. We started the day off by going into a classroom and making our own essential oils. We first started off researching each oil and what it does for our skin and health. Everyone looked at what each oil did and they decided and talked to the table on what they were going to do. There were all different essential oils that were made and as soon as we finished making them we put them all over our neck, wrist, and nose because we were all so excited.
Soon after we all headed to the busses and got ready to go to our yoga class. Everyone had different experiences with yoga. Some have been doing it for a while others have never done yoga before. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a happy face. The instructor was very nice and she gave us a little sneak peek on what we were going to be doing in the class. We started and it was a little tough but in the end, it did feel good. It was also really nice to just lay down and have her push on our shoulders and put essential oil on our foreheads.

After yoga we had about 45 min to get some food, everyone went to different places. Some people went to get a burrito and others went to get a sandwich. We then met back at the busses and went back to school. We then made our own deodorant. We all had a lot of fun making the deodorant, but it was a little messy and hard to clean up but it was worth it. That wraps it up for day 2.

Healthy Inside and Out, Day 1

Today the Healthy Living Squad looked closely into not only the ingredients of our skincare products, and their effects, but also the social and community quality of the businesses that we support. To start the day off, we researched the health and beauty products we use every day, from shampoo, to deodorant, to lotion. We discussed the ingredients in our product, and how the lack of FDA regulation may impact the quality of these ingredients.
Next, the squad ventured out of the classroom to enjoy the fortunate weather and take a walk of the area. Healthy living is not just what we put into and on our body, but also how we treat it. We walked past the school to a lovely farm and enjoyed the warm weather and fresh air.
Following that, we briefly researched the Badger Balm company, and B Corp companies in general, before setting off to learn about Badger Balm first hand on their company tour in Southern New Hampshire. The tour discussed the company's desire to not only have a positive impact on their purchasers with good products to benefit their life, but also their desire to positively influence their employees and community in general. Lastly, the Healthy Living Squad stocked up on a Badger products at the end of the tour.
