Sweet and Savory Day 3

On day three we started our day out in the NHS cafeteria helping make cornbread and chili to be served for the New Hampton Community lunch. In the afternoon, we made bagels and cream puffs.

Pastry Chef Pam's Group - We learned how to make large batches of corn bread. We started by measuring out our ingredients. We then added all the ingredients into a big stand mixer. After mixing all of the ingredients, we put them into the oven and prepared another batch by ourselves this time. We then made a batch of bread for dinner as well. After making the maple corn bread and bread we made everything and plain bagels. Overall we all had a lot of fun and learned a great deal about yeast.

Chef Jess's group - Our group worked with Jess to make Vegetarian Chili for lunch. We started off by chopping tomatoes, cilantro, and other veggies, while Nate mixed the broth. After finishing cutting up the vegetables, Julia sautéed them in a pan. We then added our broth, and other spices and let it cook. While the chili cooked we cleaned our dishes and helped with other dishes that were leftover from breakfast. We then put the silverware away and set up fro lunch. After, Jess allowed us to take a small bowl and try our Chili, it was so good! While we waited, we folded napkins for next dress dinner.

We spent the afternoon creating cream puffs. We made the pate a choux dough then piped onto a baking sheet to cook after an egg wash was applied. While the dough cooked, we made a whipped cream for the inside and cut strawberries to add to the pastry. When the pastry was done baking we waited for them to cool then cut them in half. Once in half, we placed a slice of strawberry on the bottom then piped the whipped cream onto the pastry before placing the top back on.

In the afternoon, we learned how to make bagels. It was quite the process- making the dough, proofing the dough, boiling it, egg washing and adding seasoning, and finally baking! We could not wait to try them!  Both the cream puffs and bagels were so so good. Overall, we had a great day helping our amazing New Hampton Kitchen Staff and learning all new tips for and about cooking !!
