Linguistics, day /bƐi∫/

Project week is coming to the last few days and we are becoming more familiar in Turkish!

Yesterday we explored the pronoun and preposition and started to form our own sentence. Today

we went straight into the noun, adjective, and adverbs in Turkish. By continually asking and

recording we came out a bunch of vocab words and wrote them in the phonetic way. After a

fierce discuss and talk over, we finally came up a hypothesis that noun can be turned into

adjective by adding suffixes -li/-le/ and adjective can be turned into noun by adding -lik/-lak/.

After this, we use the rest of the time in learning some basic sentences used in daily lives in

Turkish including "How are you" or "Where are you". We also did several worksheets to learn

Turkish by problem solving.

Ercan is our living answer key! He always answers questions patiently and everyone else is

working diligently .The classroom is full of laughter and the passion to seek and explore Turkish.

Linguistics part 4

Hey off-campus trips, jealous yet?

Today we kept going with the prepositions and the pronouns in Turkish that we started yesterday. Using field methods, we asked about how to say sentences in Turkish instead of the grammar itself, and we formed a list of how to say and place the pronouns in sentences. For example, there are no individual words for the nominative form of I, you, he and she; instead, they put suffixes behind the verb, like /-rim/. This is so complicated but fun to learned because it is a completely different system from English and other languages I know.

After learning these, we did some worksheets to apply what we learned to reality. We tried to find new words from analyzing and summarizing the root and affixes of the Turkish words we know. And we end the day by asking and learning some simplest greetings and short sentences in Turkish.

Today in Linguistic Field Methods, we made a number of breakthroughs regarding Turkish! First we found that Turkish values vowel agreement between root words and suffixes - but then, when discovering prepositions, we found that they intentionally shifted their vowels to DISagree with the root! This is fascinating behavior; one hypothesis we developed is that Turkish may be using a phonetic marker (suffix vowels) to transmit semantic meaning!

We also determined that Turkish finds the accusative case important enough to mark twice - once, with sentence order (Subject, Object, Verb), and again with a special suffix /-[vowel]/.

Ercan has worked tirelessly, answering questions, and everyone else is becoming comfortable speaking out loud in Turkish! And then Charles brought elves into the discussion, and things got confusing. But overall, a day of great progress!

Linguistics continues to begin!

This is the start of the second day for linguistics. Yesterday, Turkish is such a hard concept and

language to encounter in our daily lives. In fact, the structure and the order of the Turkish is

different from our languages. Today, we try to find any formula or pattern in Turkish to better

understand Turkish. Today morning, we focused on the pattern of the Turkish numbers because

numbers are the basic and the most important concept in every countries. Thus, we found out

that the numbers higher than 100 always follow the same rule like other numbers. However, as

English does, 10 digits numbers have their own unique names.

We discovered that the order of a Turkish sentence goes like subject, object and verb, which is

different from most languages. Besides, Turkish seems to be a big fan of suffixes that they

express tense, plurality, negation and even pronouns in the suffixes. Although the pronunciation

is little weird, we are trying to find the phonetic pronunciation and expression of Turkish words.

we are going to investigate further about pronouns and the vowels of suffixes. And we are going

to build our own turkey sandwich. It will be such an interesting day tomorrow.

Today is the first day of Project Week. We started with the basic understanding of linguistics. We

learnt that accent is influenced by culture different , different environment. In order to have a

better understanding of Turkish, we started with learning the International Phonetic Alphabet.

This is a chart that has different pronunciation of different letter. Since we knew how to say the

world , we can find the phonetic alphabet of it and say it easier. After learning this, we started our

study of Turkish. We learnt how to say 1-10 in Turkish and we put them into phonetic alphabet for

us to speak easily. At the end, we watched a short documentary about the accent in different

part of American. That is it for the day.
