Lifeguarding: Day 4

The students started the day, taking tests on the lifeguarding skills as well as the CPR and First Aid skills they have learned.

Today was another testing day. The students demonstrated all the skills they have learned all week in and out of the water.

CPR in the water

Deepwater rescue

The students also had to pass an individual test before becoming lifeguards. The test consisted of a deepwater victim rescue, removal of the victim from the water on a backboard with help and finally administering CPR.

The last thing necessary to become lifeguards was a team test;

They passed! Future Lifeguards!

Lifeguarding: Day 3

Today was not the most exciting day for the students, but they all worked hard to get through the online material to become a lifeguard and help them study for the written portion of the lifeguard test.

Everyone successfully completed their online course work!

Lifeguarding: Day 2

Today, we started off in the pool. We learned both rear and front passive rescues, submerged victim rescues, two-person removals with backboards, and spinal injury rescues. Teams worked to practice the timed skills we will be assessed later in the week.

After learning new skills in the pool, we went to the classroom to work on CPR. Students were excited to receive the equipment necessary to keep in their lifeguard packs. The equipment is essential to treat people while working as a lifeguard.

Student's started by learning to perform CPR on an infant.

After mastering CPR on a child, the student's then transitioned to performing CPR on adults.

After learning how to do CPR on their own, students worked in teams, putting their newly acquired skills into action for real-life situations they could face.

We finished the day, reviewing the steps to first aid and CPR and then acted out different first aid scenarios and the emergency action plan to follow.

Overall, we learned a lot about using CPR, first aid, how to save lives, as well as prevent serious situations.

Lifeguarding: Day 1

Today the group was introduced to the world of lifeguarding. We spent the majority of the morning time discussing the general practices and legal considerations of the job, learning a lot about what goes into being a lifeguard.

The group also practiced checking for a pulse and how to position unconscious victims for help and how to treat and wrap a burn or cut.

After learning some legal logistics and general practices, off to the pool! At the pool we started the pre-tests; a distance swim, brick carry, and hands-
free treading water.

To finish off a busy day, we learned some shallow and deep water life-saving skills.

Preparation for Lifeguard Training

The students involved in the Lifeguarding project are excited and nervous to get started learning the different techniques to save people's lives.

Project Title: Lifeguarding

Project Leaders: Eric Przepiorka and Steve Fay

Location: On-Campus & Southern New Hampshire University

Essential Questions: What does it take to become a certified lifeguard?

Project Description: This project is a great opportunity to gain a lifeguard certification! The skills used to become a lifeguard are useful for life and survival in general, including but not limited to provider CPR, First Aid, and lifeguarding and lifesaving skills. Becoming a certified lifeguard is convenient when applying for summer jobs and is a great way to take advantage of your project week to earn a useful certification! Students must be able to swim 100 yards to participate in this project.
