Off the Grid at D Acres!

Today we spent the day at D’acres Farm located at Dorchester New Hampshire. We had a very lovely day, but most important we got a better idea what does living of the land mean. It requires a lot more planning and hand labor, but one of the most important things is patience. There is no rush, the benefit of this is that you can organize your place and yourself better, and the more organized you are the better you will live of the land due to all the works and systems.

We arrived at the farm at around 9 am and left at 4 pm, we learned and helped the people who live at the farm all day. Later at noonwe had lunch and I can tell you that the food we had was very good, I had like 2 months since I didn’t have good food. We had potatoes, rice and pork which was tasty and nice. While having lunch the people who live at the farm explained us why they decided to live of the land, and the differences between natural farm food vs the food you get at a grocery store. We had a good time chopping wood and learning what type of systems do they use. Finally we got in the car and drove back to school.

Off The Grid - Day2

Day 2 Bernardo
Today we started the day by having a good conversation with Albert Ducharm from Snow Dragon Solar ( the expert on off-grid leaving ) he started to explain how the modules work and gave us a preview of how it works with a miniature module. He then led us through  the process of sizing a home system- Lots of Math

After Lunch  we went to a hybrid/ off grid house in Holderness. The house itself was beautiful and the technology that was in it made it amazing. The best part is that Albert talked us through the process of building the house and how the technology worked within. In other words we had a very productive second day and we learned a lot.

It even had a greenhouse

Off Grid does not necessarily mean 'without luxury'

Off the Grid Day One

Day One: Mark Hausman

Day One in Off the Grid we talked with Mr.Lamb about how the school's academic buildings are heated and powered.

We then followed up by going to Tristan Macdonald’s Off the Grid House. We looked at the solar system used to power the house and heat the water.

We also learned how the systems can payback the initial cost and further save money down the line.
