Healthy Alternatives to Baking Day 3

Day 3 was an excellent time in Healthy Alternative to Baking.  Our bake today focused on a healthy and unhealthy version of brownies.  We began with our healthy bake and put together zucchini brownies.  it was very interesting to see how brownies would come together using a type of squash.  The batter eventually went from green to brown and the results were awesome!

The final zucchini brownies product!

We began with working down the zucchini!

The zucchini brownie batter.

In the late morning we switched over to the unhealthy brownies.  We added chocolate chips, oreos, and other fun treats into the brownies.  They were irresistable!

We finished the day with a fun cookout and some cornhole outside.  Tomorrow we will focus on making both a healthy and unhealthy version of banana bread.  Check the blog for more updates after tomorrow's session!

Healthy Alternative to Baking Day 2

Today’s bake was cookies! We decided to flip the order today and make the traditional Toll House recipe

In the morning to make sure we had enough time to deliver the leftover cookies to others on campus because boy did we have a lot extra and the cookie dough is IRRESISTABLE. It was interesting to see that no two batches were alike. Everytime we pulled a dozen out of the oven, they had baked differently.

The healthy recipe (https://www.wellplated.com/healthy-chocolate-chip-cookies/) called for applesauce instead of butter, whole wheat flour, dark brown sugar and dark chocolate chips; all healthier alternatives! As they came out of the over, we were skeptical because they clearly looked different from the morning batches. Sure they were a little dry but some of us liked them better because they weren’t as intense. Believe it or not, tomorrow we are baking with vegetables…

Healthy Alternative To Baking Day 1

Today was a great start to a full week of Healthy Alternative to Baking.  Our group leaders Sophia, Hadley and Nina created an excellent plan for a fun and yummy week together.  We will be substituting healthy ingredients on our way to making treats such as cookies, brownies, banana bread, pancakes and we will finish with a bake off!

We started our week with a big grocery list and we hit the road to Market Basket in Plymouth.  The group split up and collected all of the items we needed to begin cooking.  It was great to get off campus (and of course we had to make a Dunks stop)!

We had a great trip to Market Basket!

We returned to campus, created small groups and reviewed our essential question and goals for the week.

Excited for the week!

The plan for today was to make pancakes and substitute healthy alternative ingredients during our morning session.  Each group worked hard to put together their ingredients and the results were awesome!  The pancakes tasted light and natural and we enjoyed them with different fruits and toppings.  In the afternoon, we cheated a bit and made the "unhealthy" version of pancakes as a treat with sprinkles and chocolate chips.

Working hard and working together in the kitchen!

One of the final products!

Tomorrow we move on to our next item.  Check back in tomorrow for what we will be cooking up in G House!
