It was a busy day of glazing in the studio today! People employed a wide variety of glazing techniques, from traditional approaches like dipping, brushing, and pouring to more advanced methods like bubbling, splattering, and sgrafitto. Our work will now go back into the kiln for the glaze firing and be finished in a few days. It has been a great week working with the clay! Everyone has learned a lot about the ceramic process and created some unique and exciting work!

Art of Ceramic Design - Day Four
While we waited for our work to come out of the kiln, we spent some time this morning watching clips from The Great Pottery Throwdown in preparation for our own afternoon throwdown challenges. After lunch, we split into two groups: the wheel throwing group competed in the blindfolded bowl challenge and the tallest cylinder challenge; the handbuilding group competed in a 5-minute tallest structure challenge and a 10-minute portrait challenge. Both groups had a blast! Tomorrow our work will be out of the kiln and we will start getting everything glazed!

Art of Ceramic Design - Day Three
We worked all day finishing up and putting the final touches on our sets! Everyone was hurrying to get their projects done so things could start to dry out before going into the kiln for the bisque firing. People were smoothing surfaces, adding handles, carving patterns, and trimming bowls. The work will fire in the kiln for the next two days and we'll start glazing on Friday!

Art of Ceramic Design - Day Two
We got right to work this morning on our projects! Everyone was very busy throughout the day as we rolled slabs, threw bowls, coiled, pinched, carved, and sculpted new pieces. By the end of the day, the studio was FULL of projects! Our work is now drying and tomorrow we will start to put the finishing touches on things before loading our work into the kilns.

Art of Ceramic Design - Day One
After our introduction to the medium, students researched, brainstormed, and planned out their set designs.
After lunch, we got started on our first pieces towards our sets. Some people are working on functional pieces, others are doing more sculptural things, and some stuff is a mix of both! Everyone had a blast getting messy!
