Farm to Table, Day 5

At the start of the day we went to Dartmouth College and talked to their nutritionist, Shira Evans, about what foods are good for athletes and how much nutrition we need to grow and be the best athlete. We asked her questions that we had from during the week at other farms. Then, we ate lunch in downtown Hanover.  In the afternoon we went to a co op grocery store and got to look around at the different products compared to the products at our regular grocery store. -Ted '21

Farm to Table, Day 4

Today we spent the day touring and helping out at a near by farm, D Acres. We were able to watch the process of farmers feeding the pigs, and learned about the process of preserving certain products of the farm such as: pork, spices, and lard. We also learned how to tap maple trees for syrup, and got a hands on experience. Lastly we helped uncover the farms green house, which was covered in snow.  - Max '19

Farm to Table, Day 3

The first thing we did on Wednesday, we went to Suroweic Farm, where we learned how to plant some food and we talked about what we need for planting in the greenhouse. We also tried some greens like arugula, spinach and mustard.
Then we went to Heritage Farm and we ate a lot of pancakes and we saw some farm animals.
After we ate our delicious pancakes, we headed back to New Hampton to work in our greenhouse. We cleaned it all up with the help from Mr Brewster. After we cleaned it up we planted some garlic, potatoes, broccoli, spinach and peas. Mr Brewster was very nice to us and taught us how to plant the food. In two weeks after spring break we will go to the greenhouse again and see if there is actually something growing. -Natalia '21

Farm to Table, Day 1

Will writes (pictured above after decorating his pizza):  We started off our day with researching how different foods effect our health, the economy, and the environment. Then we watched a movie called Cowspiracy. It was about how agriculture and cattle farming play much bigger roles in global warming than previously thought. After the movie, we loaded up the bus dead to our school's old food services directors house. He showed us around his house and we got to see his pizza oven which was really interesting. We got to make our own pizzas using the oven and they were delicious. When we were sitting around with Neal, he shared some of his past experiences in the food industry and how it has changed over the years. Neal has been a devout vegan so he was able to share some knowledge about that. We had a great day with Neal and his family and can’t wait to go check out a farm tomorrow.
