Day 4- College Boot Camp

With the weather being a little dreary, it was a good morning to be in the ARC working on college essays.  The morning was spent workshopping their college essays and everyone had one-on-one time with their college counselor to discuss them. We were very fortunate to spend some time with the St. Anselm's admission office and got a personal live tour of campus. Everyone loved the main tour guide as he was the most upbeat one we had all week!  In the afternoon, we talked about interviews and practiced answering questions with our neighbor.  Hard to believe there is only day left!  Here are today's reflections....

- My favorite part of the last two days was the live campus tour of St. Anselm's. One thing I have learned is that interviews can only show interest or sink you.  - Jackson Gates

-My favorite part of the last two days have been the virtual tours of all of the colleges.  One thing that I have learned was Co-Op programs that some schools like Northeastern and Drexel offer. - Kelin Jeffries

-I have enjoyed filling out my common application, reflecting on what I’ve done. I also enjoyed writing my essay, and getting ahead on that. I also learned a little bit about the interview process.- Charlie Truesdale

Day 3- College Boot Camp

Today was a big work day!  We spent the morning talking about what college admission officers are looking for in the main essay and read through some examples.  We did a couple of exercises to think about what might be a good topic for everyone and then we got down to writing.  By the end of the morning, everyone had written at least half of their essay! For lunch, we sampled the local college town's cuisine and got take out from the Groovy Noodle and Peek-A Bowl in Plymouth.  In the afternoon, we were lucky to chat with our rep from Dickinson to learn about the benefits of attending a small, liberal arts college as well as our rep from Yale who talked about selective admissions.

Day 2- College Boot Camp

It was an action-packed day as all of the students created and completed their Common Application.  It's fun to think they are that much closer to being all done! We also took a little break and visited the dog trainers from Project Week as the weather has been so lovely.  The afternoon was spent finishing parts of the Common App and learning more about colleges with Co-Op programs as well as Canadian universities.  Below are some reflections from the day....

- Today I learned that Northeastern has a large co-op program. I learned that co-op programs are similar to paid internships but that you earn college credit at the same time as resume building and gaining work experience. I also learned that Villanova hosts the largest Special Olympic event in the country. - Alex Boriss

It was great to get started in the common application. It was also nice to be able to ask questions while doing the application. I learned about some schools in Canada because I was not considering much about schools in Canada. I learned that some schools offer a co-op ( an internship opportunity in school) including Northeastern University. It was also nice to start thinking about classes I might take in my senior year. - Jaewon Oh

- I learned co-op programs are paid internships and I learned that schools such as Northeastern have them. I also learned that schools in Canada are more interested in your goals in your career and future than schools in America. - Harry Meehan

College Boot Camp- Day 1

We had a fun day kicking off the week with a mock admission case study where students got to read three college applications and pretend they were college admission officers for the day, voting to admit, waitlist and deny one student.  Everyone agreed it was helpful to see all of the various things that admission officers think about when making decisions (hint, it's not just GPA and test scores!).  We spent the second half of the day discussing some of the colleges currently in the March Madness pool, how to research a school to see if it's a good fit, and watching virtual college tours.  A highlight was the college trivia quiz that came with college swag!  A few of the reflections from the day:

- Today I had really enjoyed learning what the actual process of what going through the college admission process was like along with getting to know what the strengths and weakness of each college is like. I really enjoyed learning that every college is different in what type of student they are looking for as well.  Before I had never realized the process that everyone goes through. - Jack Hamill

Today I enjoyed all the different activities we did today. My favorite was watching all the videos of the different schools and getting to learn more about each of the campuses and what they have to offer. - Jack Fauster

-Today I learned about the work that goes into college admissions and how difficult it can be to pick between applicants. I had fun playing college trivia and winning my UVM hat.- Joe Joe DuBrul
