Exploring the Waters Around Us Day 3- U.S. Coast Guard Academy

On Wednesday, our group took a trip to New London, CT to visit the United States Coast Guard Academy.  We were met by First Class Cadet Reed who gave us an awesome and informative tour of the Academy.  He filled our time with visiting historic buildings on campus while explaining the various traditions of the Academy which was founded in 1771 by Alexander Hamilton.  Cadet Reed also explained the requirements for graduation, the 5 year commitment to serve after graduation, and the various projects students were currently working on to support the U.S. military.  Each building felt like a museum, filled with pictures and tales.  We left with a great feeling of respect for the Cadets at the Coast Guard Academy and all other military personnel.

First Class Reed explaining the murals painted on the walls in the Henriques Room located in Hamilton Hall at the USCGA.  Each mural depicts famous events the Coast Guard participated in.

A really cool project Cadets at the Academy were working on.  This project was attempting to create a collapsable rescue basket.  This would allow more space in the helicopters for more people/equipment.

The Coast Guard Academy had a small museum.  This boat was used to rescue people in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.

The group took a photo with First Class Reed in front of the Bear, the mascot of the CGA.
Overall, it was an awesome experience at the Coast Guard Academy.  Tomorrow we will be heading out on a lobster boat and learning about the exchange between fisherman and distribution centers!
