Today our group traveled to Sandwich, MA to meet with Kenny Weeks (NHS P'10, P'15). Mr. Weeks is a commercial lobsterman hauling over 800 traps off the coast of Cape Cod. While he is not in lobstering season, Mr. Weeks was able to take the group for a short boat ride. On the boat he explained the dynamic between lobsterman, environmentalists and vacationers as Cape Cod becomes very populated throughout the summer. In addition, he drove us down the Cape Cod Canal which was built in 1909 connecting Cape Cod Bay to Buzzards Bay. It was chilly on the boat, but interesting hearing about the lobstering business from the perspective of a life-long lobsterman.

Mr. Weeks' lobster boat named "Taylor and Addie" after his daughters. Addie was a graduate of NHS! |

After our boat ride, Mr. Weeks took us for a tour of The Lobster Trap, the second largest lobster distributor and wholesaler in the world. We saw large tanks of lobsters that were being packaged and prepared to be shipped as far as China! In addition, the manager at the Lobster Trap discussed the fluctuating market value of lobster based on the time of the year (demand is high over the summer, around holidays). He also talked about the impact that increased tariffs have had on his revenue. It was extremely interesting to learn about the value and process of the lobstering business.
