Day 1 Building a Tree Walk

Our day started with a quick overview of the week and the intentions of our project. After the quick run through, the boys went out to the New Hampton Nature and Fitness Trail. Once on the trail, repeat junior OT “Owen Thornton”, repeat sophomore Jack Jeffcoat, freshman Colter Olson, and freshman Owen Romanek took advantage of the Fitness Trail elements to get in a quick stretch before braving the wilderness of New Hampton.

As we walked the trail, the boys learned to identify the difference between a red and white pine, how to identify a beech tree, and how to distinguish between a dog and cat track. After the boys hard work out on the trail, they came back to campus to replenish their strength for the second half of the day. When the boys came back from lunch, they got right back to work. The boys wasted no time getting outside again. We went down to the fish hatchery and learned how to use a dichotomous key to identify the species of trees; however while down learning the ways of the dichotomous key, the boys came across some extra knowledge. The boys discovered that the New Hampton Fish Hatchery was one of the oldest fish hatcheries in the state and possibly in the USA!!!! After wrapping up at the hatchery, the boys identified one more tree before heading back to campus to enjoy the rest of the beautiful day.
