Making It In Boston Meets with Young NHS Alums

On Tuesday we visited Harvard, MIT, and Boston College. We got to see the universities in depth and learned about student life. Exploring Harvard Square was fun. We went to the BC vs Florida State basketball game and met with Olivier Hanlan ’12. Olivier was named player of the game as he was the highest scorer for BC. We enjoyed talking to Olivier and he told to us the key to success as a college athlete is staying organized and keeping a good balance between sports and academics. Alum Liam McMahon '12 also joined us to watch the game.

On Wednesday we travelled on a snowy day to BU and explored the opportunities that the university could give us. We learned the admissions requirements and expectations. The admissions officers gave us an overview and a tour. We got a chance to see the dorms and realized the difference between boarding school and college accommodations. We all liked the opportunities of a school like BU.

After a delicious lunch at the famous Durgin Park,  we met with Collin Bray ’02 in his Century 21 office on Boylston Street. Collin shared a lot about life after high school. We learned we should try to take advantage of different experiences in high school and beyond and use the resources available to us. We should be coachable and then lead with our actions and not with our thoughts. We talked about researching places before we go for interviews and internships,“DO YOUR RESEARCH.” Also learn from your mistakes. He gave us a lot of good advise.

In the evening we went to the amazing Blue Man Group. After the show we spoke with alum Ben Brewster ’08 and Liz Aquilino about internships and making the best of them and the significance of colleges locations for internships.
