New Hampshire Winter Adventure
Continuing to explore our local areas, asking questions about climate, economy, tourism, and fun.Day 2- Beautiful weather mid-week...Rip it up on the trails.
Loon Mt. has a strong tourist base, second homes, and locals; a good spot to spend the day.
Reflections:
I’ve been skiing for all my life and got to go again today. As far as tourism goes, watching people who have never skied before in the ski school I realized how new people can learn easily and have fun doing it. Skiing powers new Hampture tourism and after a day like we just had I understand why.

This has been my first day back out on the mountain in a little more than a year. It was great. Snowboarding is one of the best ways to experience winter in New Hampshire in my perspective. Loon mountain was not that crowded which made the day even better because the lifts had no lines. Most of the day consisted of a lot filming for our projects symposium film. Overall, my day was great. -BB
For the past few months I have been skiing for the freeski team at loon mountain and today I went up with my project week group. I skied the mountain to understand why it attracts so many people per year. I enjoyed this day of skiing because I got to hang out with my friends and ski and take pictures to capture the memories. It was most likely my last day skiing at loon for me this season and I’m sad to see it end. I made some unforgettable memories today and it was one amazing way to end out my ski season. -JB
Today was a day where I skied five hours. Today was a day where a goalie from Pennsylvania skied for the first time in his life in the middle of NH. My legs burn as we ski down the black diamonds. Instead of taking a break, I learned how to, as they call “power through.” I over spent on a mediocre lunch and skied with Mr Conkling, the “man” of NH. We got to experience the ultimate NH ski tour.

Since it was probably my last day on the slopes everyone went all out and got a plethora of pictures and videos, something we don't typically do. We all agreed we should get more photos and videos of us because it was cool seeing ourselves do tricks. Though I took a deeper meaning from this, I thought to myself on how I need more photos and videos because I need to sit back and capture the moment. I so rarely do this and chug through life. I had an amazing time at loon and will miss skiing. -MT
Today was another day of firsts for me. I went skiing for the first time. I don’t have many places to go skiing that is less than 3 hours from my house, so it was really nice to get that opportunity. Being able to ski was something that I was very new and fun to me. -AE
I spent all day trying to improve in the terrain park, while he spent all day improving his skiing skills. I think both of us, despite our differences, demonstrate why New Hampshire is a prime location to vacation during the winter. A mountain like Loon is attractive to all types of riders and skiers because there are opportunities to learn, and to excel. -RA
Today was a really good day for snowboarding and I think that tourists who are looking for skiing in New Hampshire should always get to experience blue bird days like this one. I had a fun time trying to teach Justin how to snowboard even if I wasn’t the best instructor. Surprisingly I had never been on a magic carpet on my snowboard. The trails were pretty good but had some ice, it was only my second time snowboarding at loon so I really got to learn the trails today. -BJ
Snowboarding was really fun. It was my first time doing it in 7-8 years. I fell a lot but it was still really cool. My instructor was really good and knew a lot. She did a lot to try and help me. Overall today was a great day to be apart of the Winter aasventure project week. -JW
Day 3- Impending Storm means stick close to home...local hike it is.
Mt. Hersey across from campus, but rarely used. Reflections:
Vermont, hiking in cold, gloomy conditions is familiar, so my experience today was enjoyable. However, many members of our group are not from New England, so they struggled a little more than me. I felt like i was able to appreciate the technicality of the trail because when my family hikes, the steeper the better. -RA
Today was a day I was really looking forward to. I really enjoy to hike and I’ve never hiked in the winter before, a new experience. I woke up sore today from yesterday’s skiing and it slowed me down, but I didn’t let this hinder my experience. I enjoyed being out in nature, surrounded by untouched land. I enjoyed the idea of going through trails only the locals know, creating a really untouched feel. Going down the mountain was an adrenaline filled adventure. This reminded me of my childhood and that rush I would get from running down the hills near my house. Overall I had a great day and I want to do more of these activities when the opportunity arises. -MT
After today I’m suprised that people only come here to hike in the summer. I personally enjoy hiking in the winter more then summer. I had a great time hiking up Hersey mountain today and the snow made it even better. This along with the skiing should make winter the more popular season. -MS
