Savannah Day 4- Davenport House and Tybee Island Beach

Blog Written by Addy '21 and Tyler '21

Today we first met up with Ms. Jamie and she demonstrated with us how to take out the seeds in the middle of the cotton. Then we walked to the Davenport House (a historic home that used to house slaves) and learned about Mrs. Davenport and Mr. Davenport and the workers that live in the house. We learned about the slaves that lived there and helped out around the house. We got a layout of what the land would’ve looked like back then, with a carriage house in the back and an outhouse nearby. The Davenport House was really big and had many rooms making at a house Mr. Davenport could show of to his money to his friends. Even though he was in a lotta debt to the state. Our group learned a lot about The Davenport house and it’s history.  In the afternoon, we went to Tybee Island and enjoyed some relaxing and fun time at the beach!  At night, we devoured fried chicken, rice and green beans for dinner.

In the morning we sat around the table and brainstormed ideas for marketing Gilbert Walker and his blacksmithing artwork.  We have a solid plan to put together starting tomorrow morning.

On our tour of the Davenport House, we got an in depth look at various rooms of the house and what would have been going on in each of the rooms.  The picture above shows the attic.  This is where slaves would have slept and spent a lot of time and there is a significant difference between the quality of the attic and the rest of the house.

We packed our lunch and enjoyed it outside in the beautiful Davenport House courtyard.

We got some downtime in the afternoon and spent a few hours on Tybee Island at the beach.  It was a beautiful beach day!
