Mapping the Trails of New Hampton Week Summary

Monday: We met at 8:30 and quickly loaded into a bus and went to the mountain biking trail. During our time there, we blazed trial C so students and other people in the community are able to easily find their way through. We met back up and went in for lunch. At 12:45, we met back up again and this time blazed trails starting from up on the hill behind Veazey all the way down to Kennedy field.

Tuesday: We met in the lower gym at 8:45 to get our COVID tests then boarded the bus to get to burleigh mountain. On the hike, we blazed the red trial and removed any debris on the trail. Before we went in for lunch, we were able to use Mr. Conklin’s butt sleds to sled down Burleigh. After lunch, we came back out and blazed the yellow trail doing the same thing we did as the red.

Wednesday: Wednesday we left school at 9 for the bottom of Hersey mountain. We started around 9:30 for our to way to the top. Along the way, there were a couple false peaks and a lot of slippery slopes to hike up. The boys were keeping focus by singing chants on the way up. Finally, we reached the peak and were able to see some amazing views and see the cabin that New Hampton owns on top of the mountain. After a break at the top, we descended down and were given the afternoon off after a tiring hike.

Thursday: Thursday we had a well deserved sleep in then met in Lane at 9:30. We started the day by looking through maps to get an idea to help us with our final project. After that we split up into groups and all got assigned a mountain or trail that we hiked earlier in the week to map out. We were able to stay on task and get a lot done and in return we were free for the afternoon.

Friday: On the final day, we met in Lane at 9:30 to share our maps that we made and critique any that needed to be. We had to make sure to distinguish between snowmobile trails, the regular trail and logging trails to ensure that people wouldn’t get lost. Finally, we ended with a conversation about what we liked about the project and how we were happy to take advantage of the perfect weather this week to connect with nature.
