Mowglis reflections

Here are two student reflections about their time helping out at Camp Mowglis...

Today, on our final day at Mowglis, we first started off by completing the painting of the tables and some of the walls we had started on Tuesday. We had a hard time finishing the tables. The reason why was because we had to paint the legs of the table, that required us to get under the table to reach the area. The problem with that was that often getting into the area caused us to get covered in paint. 

After we had completed the painting, the boys went down to the chef's cottage to take down the roof panels. The reason why we were takeing the panels down was because they had a squerill infestation in the roof.

The last thing the boys did was to go down to the lake. Some of them had never been on ice before, so it was a experience for them to be able to walk on the lake. While down there we got to see the final part of camp we had not seen before. It was a very bussy day and we could tell that they appreciated the work we did.

Working at camp Mowglis was hard work but was very rewarding work. We spent a lot of time fixing up the dining room. We spent a lot of our time sanding the tables and painting the tables and walls in the dining room. Also we cleaned up many branches and logs; we got to enjoy a camp fire with all the branches we picked up. One of the groups favorite parts of the project was making s'mores at the camp fire. Even though it was hard work, the group enjoyed helping the camp and walked away feeling good about the work we did!

Mowglis Day 3 - Hitting Our Stride

Today was spent working on projects that we started over the past couple of days. On Monday, we sanded down picnic tables for the Mowglis dining hall, and yesterday the first coat was painted on them. Today the girls, Mr. Schwab, and Mrs. Arsenault started out the morning by putting on another coat of paint and finishing the tables in the dining hall. Later they trekked down to the lower part of the camp in order to paint the inside of a building in need of a touch up. Finally they spent the latter part of the day sanding more tables.

   

The guys in the group continued the project they started yesterday, which was the big project of clearing up all the brush around the camp and stacking firewood that is going to be used by the camp when it is in session. The day was spent transporting the wood to the center of camp where the big logs were stacked and a fire continued throughout the day in order to get rid of the brush.

To top off the day, the Habitat group was treated to a late lunch at the Bridgewater Inn, owned by the parents of New Hampton’s Ms. Kang. The group enjoyed delicious pizza, pool, and karaoke to end a productive day of work.

Mowglis Day Two - Getting in touch with nature

Today was our second session at camp Mowglis. After a hard day of sanding, we were able to move on to painting and sorting out firewood. The girls were more in charge of the painting of the tables, whilst the boys stayed outside and played with firewood. Despite our divide in gender, we all came together in a joyous snowball fight at the end of the day.

Working with logs, branches, and roots kept the boys busy. We stacked the large logs and burnt the smaller and less useful pieces of wood in a fire. The fire was not only used for the disposal of unusable wood but also for roasting marshmallows. The day was a perfect combination of relaxation and hard work, giving us Husky smiles on our faces and the feelings of accomplishment.

Day 1 - Goal: Learn about Camp Mowglis and each other

Today was our first day working with Camp Mowglis! Each year they have about 80 boys ages 7-16 who come to spend their summer on the lake playing games and learning valuable lifelong lessons and skills. We are grateful to learn more about the camp that we are helping.  Normally, there are one or two staff here in the winter months, making projects difficult to tackle.  But with our help, the Camp is able to move forward with items that have been on their to-do list for years.

Today we helped by working in their dining hall. We sanded down all the tables to get ready for tomorrow when we will repaint them! We finished the day with a tour of the camp, we saw the lodge, the campfire circle, and even the dorms. So excited to come back tomorrow!

Paying It Forward at Camp Mowglis

Essential Question: "What is it like to "pay it forward" by volunteering our time and talents for the benefit of others?"

Our group plans to travel to Hebron, New Hampshire for the week! We are working at Camp Mowglis, which is an all boys summer camp. We are very excited to help create shelters and picnic tables for the camp. We hope to learn how to communicate with one another and learn construction skills throughout the week. We hope to create a better environment for the boys and the camp leaders for the summer.

Some of our Goals:
