Freeze Frame: Day 5, Editing and Printing

Today during Freeze Frame we took on the daunting task of editing and printing. Although being very much so a challenge to bring these pictures to perfection, it was very rewarding to see all of our hard work from the week come alive in the gallery. The presentation of our prints illustrates our technical skills working with our cameras and lights, as well as our technical skills in Photoshop.

We have had a very successful week leading to this culminating event. COME SEE OUR WORK ON EXHIBIT IN THE GALLERY DURING THE SYMPOSIUM! We are excited to share our week with you!

Freeze Frame: Day Four, Photographing Food with Erika Follansbee

Sharing our best images.

Today was a very productive day! We started off the morning by editing photos we took during the past week using Bridge and Photoshop.
After lunch we had photographer Erica Follansbee of Parker Street Imagery and Erica Follansbee Photography come to NHS and teach us how to make great food pictures. Once she showed us pictures of her work and illustrated the important aspects of photographing food, we took pictures of cupcakes made by the baking project week group. (Great job by the way -- they were delicious!)

At the end the day we traveled to Concord, NH to eat dinner at Moritomos and take pictures of our food. It's sad to think that tomorrow is the last day, but we can't wait to share what we have learned with our fellow NHS community.

Today we went to Nashua to meet the photographer Sid Ceaser. Sid Ceaser shoots both in his studio and on location. His work is gritty and individual, really expressing the personal qualities of his subject.

Sid worked with us on location lighting in his studio. We started with taking "head shots". He showed us how easy you can change the facial expression. After lunch we tried our own ideas with taking photos in little groups and with props. It was really fun to play in front of the camera with toy light sabers, the muppets, and a horse mask.

Freeze Frame: Day Two With Photographer Scott Bulger

Today Freeze Frame went to the studio of Scott Bulger, a professional photographer. We learned a lot about different lighting effects to take portraits of people, which was really cool. We all got to pose for pictures and take pictures too. It was a lot of fun. We learned about the different ways you can capture or accentuate the features on a person's face. I personally found the different expressions in each person's poses just as interesting and important as picking the lighting to match.

Freeze Frame: Introduction to Studio Lighting

This afternoon the Freeze Frame project group learned the basics of studio lighting. With a backdrop, reflector, two lights, and student models, we discovered how the quality, quantity, and direction of the light affects the people and backdrops. We also learned how to fix problems in lighting and how to express our style through light. At the end, we all walked away with a working knowledge of studio lighting.

Freeze Frame: Using The Camera Expressively

This morning we met in the photo classroom and learned camera basics. We devoted a lot of time learning how to create a strong and purposeful exposure according to the guidelines of the 'exposure triangle'. We learned to adjust the ISO depending on available light, the aperture for selective focus or greater depth of field, and the shutter speed for expressive control of motion. We also learned about white balance, image quality, and focal lengths. For half of us this was a comprehensive review, for the other half it was all new information!

Project Freeze Frame

Our group of aspiring photographers met today for the first time, DSLR cameras in hand. We are excited to get started Monday morning!

Highlights of the week will include working with three professional photographers. We will learn to create portraits with both standard studio lighting and with ‘on-location’ studio lighting, and work with a professional wedding/food photographer to make baked delicacies look appetizing and beautiful through design and light. We will also learn the ins and outs of setting up and running our own creative business.

It’s going to be an inspiring week!
