NHS Greenhouse Materials Have Arrived

The NHS Green House is becoming a reality! On Thursday we picked up the materials we will use to build the hoop house! Below are some images of what the hoop house will look like once complete.
And here is a to-scale drawing of one of the end walls, which we will build by hand, with sliding barn doors.

The essential questions we will explore are:
Why is it important to know how to grow your own food?
What does it take to grow food year round in NH?

Comforting CHaD

Comforting CHaD is ready to learn and serve.

Can quilting be a community building activity that brings a small community together for a greater cause?

We have eight students in our group. We will be on campus planning, sewing, and learning, along with small trips for materials and to drop off our handmade blankets for children who are staying at Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD).

Inspired by Project Linus, we are ready for the first steps in producing our handmade quilts and blankets that will go to comfort sick children. We met today as a group and talked about some basics for next week. Each member of our group has been asked to make a plan, including what types of blankets and what types of fabric they may want to use.

Nothing feels better than snuggling with a blanket. Here are a couple examples of what we can make. Mrs. Richardson (Kristin McClure’s mom) will be joining the group to help teach some sewing skills and give advise on the types of blankets and quilts she makes.

We are excited to learn the skill of sewing and serve our community by donating our blankets to CHaD.

We Are Packed!

Project Adventure got together as a group last night. We had dinner, exchanged some laughs, learned about the differences between Italy and America (thanks Otto), gave SeungWon the nickname "Python",  and then we got to work packing our bags.

We brought all of our personal gear, and we also pulled all of our camping equipment out of the Gear Room. We brought it all down to the lower gym. We set up and inspected our tents, as well as checked our sleeping bags for broken zippers and holes. After being satisfied with the condition of everything, we stuffed our backpacks and check bags. Dividing up tents, sleeping bags, cook stoves, pots and pans, we were careful not to to exceed the 50lb limit per bag. Once we were done, we stood around and checked Moab's weather for next week. I will spare you the pleasant day to day forecast, but will tell you we were all smiles.

Today I got off the phone with the last guide service and we are all set and booked for all of our adventures. You can take a look at the companies we are using, and get more information about what we are doing by clicking on the links below.

We leave campus this Sunday at 3am. We are stoked!

Project Freeze Frame

Our group of aspiring photographers met today for the first time, DSLR cameras in hand. We are excited to get started Monday morning!

Highlights of the week will include working with three professional photographers. We will learn to create portraits with both standard studio lighting and with ‘on-location’ studio lighting, and work with a professional wedding/food photographer to make baked delicacies look appetizing and beautiful through design and light. We will also learn the ins and outs of setting up and running our own creative business.

It’s going to be an inspiring week!

The Business of Upcycling: First Meeting!

The Business of Upcycling meeting is currently in the planning stages! Students are brainstorming fun upcycling ideas and looking at inspirational boards on Pinterest. Students are also brainstorming possible materials and methods of obtaining materials inexpensively and sustainably for projects. Ideas that we are currently discussing include things like windows, picture frames, silverware, fabrics, glass jars, CDs, sporting equipment, and shopping carts. A list of essential keywords has also been created; these words are: refurbish, recycle, profit, patience, creative thinking, problem solving, sustainability, budget, learning, and FUN!

On Friday, two of our members will briefly give a sneak preview as to our plans and ideas. We look forward to Monday and beginning our adventure. Stay tuned and follow along with us as we put recycling and sustainability to the test!

NHS Greenhouse is Becoming a Reality.

We are so excited to be in the final stages of preparation for the NHS Greenhouse project that will commence next week. We have ordered materials for the end walls, doors, and raised beds, and Mr. Shackett and Mrs. Joslin will be off to Rimol Greenhouses in Hookset, NH tomorrow afternoon to pick up the greenhouse frame. You can check out this structure at the Rimol Greenhouse website.

We met with our group today and discussed our two essential questions and some logistics for the project. The project will be a valuable experience for the participants and will result in a versatile learning space for future Huskies. Over the last several months, an extended group of supportive faculty, staff, and administrators have been planning and brainstorming ways in which the community might benefit from this project. You all know who you are, and we thank you for this opportunity.

Project Flight is Ready for Takeoff!

We have 13 students ready to begin our experiment in aviation next week! We will begin with ground school, where students will learn about aviation basics, including what allows a plane to fly. One day we will head to Boston to experience the wind tunnel at MIT. We will also begin flying RC planes through a buddy box, which is a risk-free way for inexperienced fliers to gain experience; if the pilot begins to get into trouble, the instructor can take over control of the plane. After gaining experience through the RC planes as well as iPad simulators, students will fly in a full simulator in Maine.

It will be a great week, the kids are psyched and ready to go!!

It May Be a Crime to Miss This!

NHS students curious to learn about the criminal justice system during Project Week 2K14 do great inquiry exercise generating questions about the process from alleged criminal act and law enforcement through the court proceedings and the incarceration aspect of the system. The Criminal Justice project explores these topics with jail tours and opportunities to meet with experts in the field of law enforcement and justice.  Stayed tuned for upcoming posts of student reflections, images from the week, and additional updates!

Criminal Justice Group Excited To Get Started!

Follow the Criminal Justice group on our group blog, criminaljusticeprojectweek14.blogspot.com, all week long!

Today we discussed our preconceived notions and brainstormed questions we have:

Prison
  • Do the guards get to know the inmates for who they really are rather than just what they have done?
  • How do inmates continue relationships with their families and friends?
  • Are prison guards how they are depicted in movies?
  • What is solitary confinement? Why do you get it? Does it work? What’s its purpose?
  • Has anyone broken out?
Court
  • Do people really follow “not lying” in courtroom?
  • How do judges not show bias?
  • How do you pick jurors?
  • Are defense attorneys that are provided as good as ones you hire?
  • As a lawyer, what do you do/how do you feel if you know your client is guilty?
  • How do you decide sentencing? Is it subjective?
We are excited about our week! Stay tuned for more posts!

Making it in Boston 2014

Hello!!!!!!!!! Today is a very exciting day for the "Making it in Boston" project. We are planning the activities that we are going to do during the week, which include college visits, meeting with young alumni of New Hampton School, finding the best streets to shop, and where we can go to eat. We are going to try Japanese, Italian, and many other cuisines. It all sounds really exciting.

Lifeguards!

Future Lifeguards of New Hampton meet to plan out their project week!

Mountain Mechanics Hoping for Bluebird Days!

Today we will gather together as a group for our first official meeting. We have twelve skiers and riders in our group. Some of our group members have competed in slope style events and giant slalom events. Other group members consider themselves weekend warriors. Finally, we have a few skiers that will rent equipment and remember what it feels like to sink in an edge!

We are excited to work with terrain park managers during our first day at Loon Mountain. We’ll see how the boxes, rails, and walls are made in the shop and maybe do a bit of welding. In the afternoon we'll have a chance to take some laps through the park and see how the hard work in the shops translates to fun and creativity on the hill.

Ireland

The Emerald Island is 4 days away, and my excitement is making it difficult to sleep. I have been checking the weather reports, and although we may get some wet weather, that is pretty typical for Ireland this time of year. There are many more days that are forecast to include some sunshine. Temperatures will be in the high 40's to mid 50's.

Service Learning in the DR Project Details

I received an email today from Xaivier, our Tour Director in the Dominican Republic. She is a freelance mural artist as well as a Tour Director for EF Tours in the DR. Xaivier is extremely excited for our group from NHS to arrive in only 10 days!

Our group will be working with The Dream Project. The non-profit organization focuses on education and our group has an amazing opportunity to work in a model community, Abreu, Dominican Republic on the north coast, where we will be paining murals outside of a public school, assisting with ESL and educational workshops.

The Service Project is to beautify the entrance to the Abreu High School. There is a 10-panel wall that lines the entrance to the school. The school has requested various murals that reflect their commitment to excellent and local Dominican culture. Students will work with a local artist to design and paint the scenes. We will be working directly with the Elementary school students in the DREAM library in the Abreu School. Classes such as ESL, art and other suggestions from our students are possible in which we will work to develop and teach the classes.

And there is this...
